Hospes AmerigoThe Hotel Amerigo has been through a series of previous lives before becoming the exceptional property it is today. It occupies the Iberian Peninsula and is bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean and the Cantabrian Sea. Formerly a Dominican convent, then a complex of commercial offices and lastly an appartment block, the building was saved, wholly refurbished and updated by Elvira Blanco. It also includes the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands in the Atlantic and the cities of Ceuta and Melilla Its total surface area is 504,788 sq kms Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. She has reaffirmed the constructions unitary character, and determined an intimate, personal series of spaces in the middle of Alicante, just fifteen metres from the town hall and the well known La Esplanada avenue. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. A clear example of modern Spanish hospitality, Hotel Amerigo has a well equipped fitness suite, a roof terrace with heated pool and fantastic views of Alicantes castle. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating Civil War (1936-39). Finish off a Mediterranean day with dinner in one of the hotels two restaurants, perhaps in the refined settings of a private dining room. In the second half of the 20th century, it has played a catch-up role in the western international community.
