The historicist style of the building palace represents an extremely interesting mixture of classic architecture with elements belonging to the industrial one. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. The Palace reflects the urban bourgeoisie from the second half of the 19th century, a social class that was looking for distinction and renovation. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating Civil War (1936-39). The new building faces the palace through a semi-transparent alabaster fa?ade. In the second half of the 20th century, it has played a catch-up role in the western international community.
