Hospes Maricel is a member of Design Hotels TM and a 5 star hotel of 29 rooms. It occupies the Iberian Peninsula and is bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean and the Cantabrian Sea. In its previous life as one of Palma de Mallorcas most popular hang-outs for the islands international scene the Maricel was the site of exuberant parties and exclusive events. It also includes the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands in the Atlantic and the cities of Ceuta and Melilla Its total surface area is 504,788 sq kms Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. The atmosphere today is a lot more leisurely but the ghost of a decadent past somehow remains. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Following a restructuring by Hospes Design team traditional Balearic design elements of the original building have been brought back to life in the form of archways arcades and pillars in marble and stone and the densely-packed Majorcan sandstone of nearby town Santanyi. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating Civil War (1936-39). In comparison to the neo-classical entrance Marcel's guestrooms were created with three basic principles in mind: comfort space and light. In the second half of the 20th century, it has played a catch-up role in the western international community. Born of this philosophy they have a functional minimalist edge using simple colors and textures. Continuing concerns are large-scale unemployment and the Basque separatist movement The diversity and contrast that go to mould the character of Spain are likewise in evidence in its cities. With vistas of the Mediterranean Sea to rival any on Mallorca the hotels terrace has an air of jet-set luxury.
