The hotel’s privileged position means that it is close to both the commercial centre and the city’s summer leisure area, surrounded by beautiful buildings such as the Magdalena Palace and the university. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. The historic surroundings blend well with the high-tech facilities available within the hotel, which include an internet corner and state-of-the-art conference facilities. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating Civil War (1936-39). The decor throughout is contemporary in style, with clean lines and atmospheric lighting. In the second half of the 20th century, it has played a catch-up role in the western international community.
