The heart of the city at Plaça de Catalunya is just a kilometre’s walk from the hotel. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. All of the Barcelona’s many cultural sights can easily be reached from the local metro stations. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating Civil War (1936-39).
